Round 15 Sat August 1st v Morwell at Home
Liam Durkin - 200 games
HIS has certainly been a unique journey. Liam Durkin plays his 200th game for Moe this week.
Durks has played close to 15 seasons for the club, and experienced just about the full gamut of reserves football. He has played in strong teams, average teams, and barely teams, which reflects a career record of more than 100 wins but also 25 games where the losing margin has been a minimum 90 points.
The left footer has played in four finals series, and in every type of final except a grand final. Playing mainly on a wing or across half-forward, the 31-year-old has kicked more than 150 goals, with a personal best of nine. He managed to kick goal of the year in 2019, with a four bounce running effort at Ted Summerton Reserve that attracted more than 20,000 views online.
A diligent trainer, he has only missed two games since debuting in 2013, and at one stage enjoyed a run of 109 consecutive games. He was awarded the Ian Jennings Memorial trophy in 2017, presented annually to the Moe player who displays excellence on and off field. The unique part of his career is multifaceted. Durks is the Moe reserves games record holder, and played a likely league record of 184 games before finally playing in a winning final last year.
His career as a journalist also puts him in an extremely unique position, dealing with clubs he plays against, and also (perhaps even more challenging) players he plays with. Ordinarily, he will play in the twos, and then get the notepad and camera out to cover the second half of the seniors. Off field, he has been a natural fit to write the club notes for the record, which he has done so for more than 10 years, and to keep the club’s history books up to date. He also produces his own podcast, and has had stints on local radio. Moe footballers and netballers have often featured in his published works.
Juzzi Morrow - 100 games
A SURNAME synonymous with the Moe Football-Netball Club adds another footnote to its history books this week, with Justin Morrow set to play his 100th game. Known to all as Juzzi (or Justice or Juz-man), the midfielder/forward is one of the most recognisable and energetic personalities around the club.
Opportunistic around goal, he is perhaps the greatest personification of the phrase: “when he’s on, he’s on”. Juzzi has enjoyed some of the most outstanding purple patches, at times seemingly having the ball on a string for minutes on end.
Examples include a five-goal haul in his first senior game for the season last year, and another four goal effort that is still remembered as ‘Morrow’s Match’.
His personal best is six goals.
A past club captain, he is one to drive standards on game day and on the training track. His journey to 100 games has also been determined, as he has battled concussion at times. A chippy turned sparkie by trade, he is often seen igniting celebrations following a win (“Get some tunes pumping”).
Juzzi has played in multiple finals series, and also had the thrill of playing alongside his brothers, Sam and Tyler, and cousins Ben and Trent. Cousins Lachlan and Matt have also played for the club, as have uncles Brett and Darren, while aunty Karen is a life member.
All up, the Morrows have combined for more than 700 games in the maroon and blue.
